Why Take Your Self-Published Book to the
Local Market First
by Blondie L. Clayton
What is it with us self-published authors, we don’t take too
kindly to suggestions that our initial ideas may need to be re-worked?
The first time author brings a stubbornness to the market which holds
them hostage and resistant to advice.
Maybe that is not you but I had to admit some things over the past 17
years related to my self-published book. When I did my story I
struggled with whether I was approaching the market with something that
was saleable. To my surprise when I did enter the internet market I
quickly realized there were millions of books on abuse, many stories
similar to mine, and a good many written by the experts.
Though I wanted to have an internet presence I chose not to right away.
Instead I opted to go local. That turned out to be the best choice for
me. Looking back I am glad I made the decision to work my local
market. The competition on the internet is fierce. You are in the
market with the experts and the seasoned Gurus who have mastered
internet marketing, so getting noticed can be frustrating, time
consuming and not profitable right away.
The local market profits can be a hedge against the slow uncertain ride
to making profits on the internet. Had I dived into the internet with
what I knew back then I would have died out broke. The internet market
requires a different approach. There is a lot of competition. You may
have to change titles, learn how to write keyword content and become
proficient in working the social media.
I believe the first time author should establish their presence in the
local market first. Why? It is an opportunity to work out the kinks,
adjust to your new position as author, gain experience in sharing your
book topic, etc., build confidence, learn what it takes to make the
internet profitable and work it as you go, along with your local
business.
