How to Publish A Book Without Being Scammed!
by Blondie L. Clayton

Some mistakes can’t be fixed but the lessons learned can be powerful tools for future use. The path to writing my first book was cluttered with woulda, coulda, shouldas.

After paying for a manuscript to be typed in book format by a typing service that didn’t know what I meant by camera ready, I had to laugh.

I paid for that job to be typed twice, two different services because I was too embarrassed to go back to the first one.

Doing something you’ve never done before can be laced with many trials and errors. It would be nice when we started something that everything would go smooth, without any bumps in the road.

Do I holler “scam” because I didn’t know what I wanted? Are they responsible for educating me? No!

If you want to avoid publishing scams, you need both sides of the picture: the pros and cons of book publishing. What gets the first time author in trouble is the pie in the sky ideal related to book publishing. From the outside it appears glamorous and carries prestige, but from the inside is where your big ideas are snuffed out very quickly.

I didn’t expect something for nothing. I knew there would be work, but the work was not familiar to this non-writer at the time. It required study and implementation. The first time writer seeking to author a book too often finds the work too overwhelming and opts for the print on demand self-publishing glitter.

Knowledge is the only way to minimize your risk of being scammed. Perhaps I should give you an example here that might be an eye opener. Let’s say you purchase a package. Your investment is $999. In one stop you get your book printed and positioned for online sales, plus you receive 10 copies of your book.

If you sold those 10 books for $12.95 how does that impact your investment. You feel scammed because you jumped for worldwide distribution access, getting into print, your name on a book; a few promises that still didn’t get you those million sales.

What’s wrong with that picture? It was a legitimate sale, but you didn’t understand how it worked. Here is the reality: you are in print. You have been positioned to rake in profits but guest who has more work? YOU!!!! You need more than 10 books to recoup your investment, but all you could afford was $999.00.

You have two choices: Use your positioning, create activity to drive folks to the site. Start a blog on your topic. Go to forums to talk about your subject. E-mail your family and friends about your new book.

There’s nothing wrong with the system, it’s the lack of understanding of how to work the system.
