Book Signings: How to Walk Away with the
Gold
He who spices up their
book signing with enthusiasm and creativity wins.
How many book signings have you witnessed, where
the authors were monotone, boring and appeared uninterested in being
there? First time author presentation styles take time to develop.
It’s a new experience, if you are not already involved in the
public’s eye.
Why do some authors outsell others at book
signings? The traditionally published author steps into the role
knowing that he/she has the publisher’s backing and their
attitude is “my books are going to sell because I have a big name
publisher.”
You can recognize them. They look down their noses
at you, pick up a copy of your book in your face and examine it looking
for something to criticize. The difference between the self
publisher and the traditional publisher can be summed up in words like
drive, hunger, food, rent, etc.
The self-publisher has put their hard earned cash
on the line and there’s no turning back. Here are a few tips to
help you walk away with the gold: write out a script answering the
question “what is your book about,” practice delivery in 30
seconds or less. Instead of just reading excerpts from your book, why
not create a mini talk from your book content.
Don’t stand around waiting and hoping people
will come to you, hand out a post card inviting them to stop by. Offer
incentives, something they can win. Make it relevant to your book
content. For example, ask visitors if they would like to be the
smartest person in the store for the day by attending your presentation
and the one who can answer the most questions wins a $20.00 gift card.
Plan out your book signing to be fun, engaging and
profitable. In addition to planning how to get visitors to stop by, you
may also want to order additional books, stop by the location and
mingle with the visitors, hand out flyers, and personally invite.
Arrive early to continue meeting visitors and
sharing with them whatever you have planned for that day to attract
visitors to your table.
